Jupyter Notebook (formerly IPython Notebooks) is a web-based interactive computational environment for creating and displaying Jupyter notebook documents.

What do people mean when they say Jupyter Notebook?

When people say Jupyter Notebook, they often mean the document itself, but sometimes they do refer to the web-based interface to edit .ipynb documents. It doesn’t really matter at all though.

JupyterLab

JupyterLab is a newer user interface for Project Jupyter, introduced in 2018.

JupyterLab offers the building blocks of the classic Jupyter Notebook (notebook, terminal, text editor, file browser, rich outputs, etc.) in a more flexible and intuitive user interface.

To sum up, go with JupyterLab for a well-maintained piece of software in the future.

Install JupyterLab

If you installed Python from Python.org, you have to install JupyterLab using pip – Python’s default package manager.

On Windows, open a Run window, type in cmd to start a Command Prompt window and run the following commands to install Jupyter Notebook.

pip install jupyterlab
Code language: Python (python)

Once the installation is completed, you will see a “Success” message.

Similarly, if you use Anaconda instead of the default CPython, run the following commands in Command Prompt to have JupyterLab installed.

conda install -c conda-forge jupyterlab -y

Once the installation is complete, the Command Prompt would look like the following screenshot.

Install Jupyter Notebook (Optional)

This section is for those who wants to stick with the classic Jupyter Notebook.

If you installed Python from Python.org, you have to install Jupyter Notebook using pip – Python’s default package manager.

On Windows, open a Run window, type in cmd to start a Command Prompt window and run the following commands to install Jupyter Notebook.

pip install notebook
Code language: Python (python)

Wait for a minute as pip does its job. Once the installation is completed, you will see a message that looks like the following screenshot.

Jupyter Notebook is included in Anaconda install by default. So no need to call pip if you had Anaconda on your system.
